Neck Pain

The neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small vertebrae. The cervical spine supports the full weight of your head which is on average about 12 pounds. While the cervical spine can move your head in nearly every direction, this flexibility makes the neck very susceptible to pain and injury.

tmj Elkhorn, NE

TMJ

TMJ is an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint which connects the mandibular, or your lower jaw, to the temporal bones of the skull. The TMJ is one of the more unique joints within your body as it allows you to move your jaw forward, backward, and side to side so that you can chew, talk, sing, yawn, and more. This joint can be found just in front of your ears on both sides of your head.

Any problem with the muscles, ligaments, discs, bones, or the joint itself are known as temporomandibular disorders or TMD and refers to the actual disorder, where the jaw joint is misaligned and causing problems such as pain, inflammation, and inability to move or operate the jaw. However, these problems or conditions are often incorrectly called by the joint name of TMJ instead.

Auto Injuries

Even a “minor” crash can result in serious injuries like ligament sprains. This can lead to chronic pain and disability if not treated properly. In fact, research shows that early treatment is the best way to prevent long-term symptoms. Chiropractic adjustments are effective because they help restore the healthy, normal function of your nervous system without the use of drugs or surgery.

Sciatic nerve pain varies in intensity from mild to severe, and frequency may range from occasional to constant. The onset is generally gradual and not necessarily associated with a previous event. Sciatica is also known as radiating or referred pain, neuropathy, or neuralgia.

Degenerative Disc Disease Elkhorn, NE

Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is when natural changes in the discs of your spine cause pain. The discs between vertebrae act as shock absorbers for your spine, and as you age, they begin to lose flexibility. While this is a normal part of aging, it should not cause pain. If you experience pain due to this, it is classified as degenerative disc disease.

Each disc is composed of a sturdy outer wall and a soft, gel-like inner core. When we are born, these discs are primarily composed of water, but as age advances, the discs lose some of this water content and begin to get thinner. As you might imagine, this means each disc doesn’t absorb the shocks of everyday life as well.

Heel Spurs/Plantar Fasciitis Elkhorn, NE

Heel Spurs/Plantar Fasciitis

Heel spurs occur in at least 50% of people who have plantar fasciitis. Past treatments for heel spurs, a bony growth that begins on the front of your heel bone and points toward the arch of your foot, included surgery to remove the growth. Nowadays, surgery is rarely a treatment option and more plans for physical therapy, ice, and pain medications are used to treat heel spurs.

Disc Injuries: Bulges, Herniations, Disc Degeneration

Spinal discs act as the cushions for our spine and also allow for mobility between each vertebra. The discs are comprised primarily of connective fibers and a gel-like substance, which can wear out over time. Weakening of the outer edge can lead to the disc bulging or herniating (the inner contents of the disc leak through the outer layer of the disc), which can encroach on nerves or other structures, leading to pain, numbness, and/or tingling. The chiropractic adjustment helps alleviate pressure off of those structures, as well as works to restore the disc integrity.

Nerve Impingement Syndromes: Sciatica and Radiculopathy

Occasionally nerves or the nerve root can be pinched and irritated, causing symptoms to travel down the leg or arm. With Sciatica, the sciatic nerve is pinched as it passes through the gluteal region, frequently causing a dull, aching pain down the leg. Radiculopathy can occur in either the arm or leg and is the result of a nerve root being pinched as it exits the spine. Oftentimes, this results in pain, numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in the arm or leg. Chiropractic adjustments, stretching, muscle release techniques, and massage can help alleviate pain and correct these problems.

Muscle Pain

Everyday our bodies are in constant motion. Repetitive movements, lifting injuries, prolonged postures, and even accidents can cause tightness and/or trauma to our muscles. Muscle pain can be the result of muscle fibers shortening, causing them to become tight, and then not wanting to relax. This leads to a spasm or “knot” in the muscle. Our movements, postures, and muscle contractions become painful as a result.
